Indian Food on Wheels; it’s A Street Food Flavor-Party In Your Mouth!

Indian food has always been tricky, for me. It’s one of those foods that you can either love or hate, completely depending on where you get it; and it is equally as hit-or-miss with its digestive side-effects…
Now take all that, and DOUBLE IT for Indian “Street Food”!

I’m lucky to have an awesome foodie friend who knows her stuff when it comes to Indian food AND where to get it. So right off the bat, this is a special Thank You to Kanchan for recommending this place, and guiding me and the crew through its fabulous fortes of festive flavors. We had a BLAST (or a “Dhamaka”..? I hope I’m not completely misusing that word)
Now before I start yapping on about the food and the place, let me just say that up until about 2 weeks ago (just after I had made my Mexican Food post), I whole-heartedly thought there was NO SUCH THING as a “Food Truck” in Dubai. Well, let me just go on the record saying “I was wrong.”
Ever since the post I have gotten lots of feedback, claims and even recommendations about food trucks in Dubai. Now, these places STILL don’t count as “food trucks”. (I’ll explain why at the bottom of the post so I don’t waste more time). However, the place I am posting about today ACTUALLY IS a FOOD TRUCK… with WHEELS… that MOVES AROUND!
Today’s find is new… it is colorful… and it is awesome! It is the “Bolly Food” truck!

Bolly Food is an Indian street food eatery, with no more than 7 or 8 food items on the menu… and we tried them all!
First, the Butter Chicken Burger; They use pulled chicken saturated in a thick butter-chicken gravy, pasted together into a patty and served in a slider bun… and the taste is delicious!
Second, the Vada Pav; which is a traditional vegetarian street food typically made of spiced mashed potato, but here it is also infused with a core of rich molten cheese that explodes in your mouth on the first bite, and just makes the whole sandwich pop to life.
Third is the Bombay Sandwich, which is another vegetarian option, but without the cheese. Rather it is like a sort of veggie club sandwich using toast instead of a bun, and with more mixed vegetables than the Vada Pav. I can’t say this one was a favorite, but I am also the very opposite of a vegetarian… I am a carnivore through and through, so give me my meat and I am happy. Beast Mode, always!
This brings us to fourth: My FAVORITE savory item on the menu… the Lamb Burger! A thick, juicy mutton patty chockfull of tikka masala spices and just bursting with spicy meaty flavor! A… Must… Have…
Next on the menu are the 2 choices of side items, which you can either get with meal combos of the above sandwiches, or just order separately:
The fries; golden, thinly cut potato fries served properly fresh and hot.
And the Idli Fries; which is my 3rd favorite item on the savory menu (only because of the item that comes next...). The Idli Fries is an awesome twist on traditional Indian rice-cakes, cut into wedge-sized pieces and deep fried into crunchy spiced bites of awesomeness. I just couldn’t stop pecking on the damn things!
And that brings us my 2nd favorite, which is the Idli Fries I just mentioned… but covered in the delicious pulled butter chicken! And let me just say… it is GENIUS! It is basically a variation on the idea of Texas Fries, but with a perfect Indian blend. And because it uses the Idli Fried rice instead of potatoes… it doesn’t get soggy!
And last but not least… the purely heavenly invention that is the Nutella Samosa! Bites of sheer ecstasy combining salty samosa shells with sweet nutella; and nothing more need be said.
The portions are not big (the sandwiches are more sliders than burgers), but the prices more or less make up for it, and they allow you to try out more than one item; which is great because you SHOULD try more than one. It’s part of the experience and the street food vibe.
Also, each of the sliders comes in a different colored bun, perfectly suiting the Bollywood-style theme of the place. The vibrant colors, along with the flood of mixed flavors, and the “Indian street food with a modern twist” feel, make the Bolly Wood truck a definite MUST TRY for any flavor-fond foodie!
Check out the pictures & recommendations below, and you can go try it yourself at the Truckers Carnival in the Ibn Batuta Mall parking area, up until the 15th of November. The truck will then set out for the J Lo & Ed Sheeran concerts at the Autism Rocks arena, and will later settle at the Kite Beach in Jumeirah.
So stay tuned to my Instagram @JPfoundaplace for the next delicious escapade with me, JP… and the crazy bunch of misfits that go with me on these foolish bouts of food-coma finds.
Kanchan, Trisha, and Mo-Nada… the Crew! (And hopefully next time my partner in life and crime will be able to join… Yes, I’m talking to you, Mona!)

PS: So as promised, this is why the recommendations I got still don’t count as “Food Trucks”. Simply, because they are just truck versions of a restaurant chain (like Wingsters). I even found a Mexican food truck right next to Bolly Food at Ibn Batuta that tasted pretty good, but: 1) Not as good as Chalco’s, and 2) It is still just the truck version of their 2 restaurants in Abu Dhabi.
